‘hip and respectable’

Ever since I started writing for the Philippine Star, I’ve been getting a lot of letters on my once not too active email address at yahoo. They write to react to something I said in the column that resonated with them. There are some who express disagreement. Even though some of them read the article on my website, they opt to email rather than use the comment box. I suppose some people are not comfortable having others read their thoughts and reactions on my blog. Whatever you readers choose is fine with me . As Mae West liked to say, ‘Call me anything but call me often.’ ha ha.

I also noticed that since then, I’ve also stopped writing regular stuff on my blog. By that I mean writing in a more informal mode. I normally write ‘on the fly’ and just correct the grammar and spelling after and upload it immediately. But since I got the column, I’ve been more deliberate.

Well, this entry is going to change that. I just want to write without having the pressure of being deep or profound and scrutinized by readers of the Star. This is my blog and I shall do what I please. So if I sound stupid in this entry, well… this is ME right now.

Ever since I took the job of headmaster for Pinoy Dream Acadremy, the reality TV show of ABS-CBN, it seems I have assumed a different persona to a lot of people. While I am still recognized as Jim of APO, I am also called “headmaster’ now and after they ask me a question or two about Danny and Boboy, they ask me also about their favorite scholars in PDA. It seems that in many people’s eyes, I have been recreated. And even if PDA is just a TV show, I feel that having the title of ‘headmaster’ seems to have imbued me with some respectability and even ‘authority’. This is the power of media. Don’t get me wrong, I do take the job quite seriously. I am dealing with young artists of various backgrounds, temperaments and levels of talent. Together with Moy Ortiz, Maribeth BIchara and a few others, our job as their teachers and mentors is to teach them as much as we can to give the wings to fly later on. In practical terms, we want them to be better singers, dancers and people and we are aiming to recreate them to better versions of themselves that is more or less measurable every week.

It’s not an easy job for them and us. We all work hard and often we see the results. But they have a long way to go, and so do we. Personally, I enjoy seeing their stories unfold, not so much the love angles and the bickering which reality TV picks up, but the personal triumphs that they experience. Some of them never imagined that they could ever summon the talents they have inside, or the spirit to pick themselves up after disappontments and redeem themselves over and over again before the TV audience’s eyes and most importanty before their own. Crisis helps people individuate once they get over the feeling that it will break them. Or maybe it really does break them and what comes out is the beautiful essence inside.

If you haven’t seen an episode, try catching it around 9:30 PM every night. You may not get into it with just one watching so watch two or three episodes. A good story is bound to unfold.

Ugh!!
I’ve been getting many nights of bad sleep since I returned from Sydney. All of a sudden, I find everything in my old neighborhood too noisy. There are the tricycles, the noisy diesel cars that pass by, carpenters who hammer quite eartly in the morning, the dogs barking. All these wake me up too early too often. Five months in Sydney made me rediscover the beauty and healing powers of good sleep and silence which I now sorely miss.

Kami nAPO Muna, the tribute album to APO continues to rock! It’s great that since its relrease last August, it is still selling very briskly. It is still no.1 in the record bars, and the songs are still top downloads for ringtones, and yes, also enjoying heavy radio play. The craziest thing is that Danny, Boboy and I are once again receiving mail from grade school and high school students. It was quite a thrill (and a laugh) recently hearing a grade 6 student over the radio request an APO song in the original and new version. To many of these kids, they are discovering us for the first time. I’ve heard of many parents and kids buy the double album and exchange listening tastes. This is so pleasantly unexpected and wonderful. It’s good to be recognized for something we did in the past. Time was when we started, Danny, Boboy and I were looked at as ‘hip’. As we got older, we became ‘respectable’. Now, we are once again hip and respectable. Ha ha. As I always tell my own kids, you never know what life will bring!

Salamat Universe!

  1. Hi Jim ๐Ÿ™‚ hayy thank God you made an entry like this hehe I mean don’t get me wrong, I love your previous entries…it’s just that they’re too deep for me but of course I learn a lot of things from them…i just hesitate to comment all the time. Maybe because of the fear that I might not have a valid insight or i might end up talking nonsense…I guess i was pretty much intimidated with your other posts.

Anyway regarding PDA…I’m a fanatic. Though the petty quarrels and love stories add spice to the show, I’m more into the music. I so so admire and envy the scholars especially those who can write their own songs and play musical instruments (remember? I asked you once if you know anyone who give guitar lessons). Great show. BTW A bunch of us are in pinoy exchange (forum) discussing the episodes of PDA..there are a lot of hardcore fans there and lots of pretty good suggestions and thoughts (and of course rantings against other scholars, jurors, teachers etc) but really a good venue…anyway you’re a good HM. I was moved when you comforted Kristoff,u know when you were telling him about ur son Mio.

    Anyway till here…great blog!

  2. vernaloo–ha ha. I didn’t know the other entries kinda intimidated people. Now I know why they write me in my yahoo email.

So glad you are enjoying PDA. It is quite a different TV experience. I do check PEX once in a while to sort of see how people are reading the whole thing.

Kristoff is a great kid. He has so much spirit talaga. Actually, I’ve become attached to all of them. I really wish them the best and hope we are passing on the right stuff.

Yes I do notice people in the chats can hget pretty hot. I just read and not comment and take in the good, workable sugggrestions. I just smile at the conspiracy theories. It’s amazing!

    Keep visiting.

  3. of course you’re familiar with PEX…what made me think ur not? hehe

anyway oh my..i hope you did not come across my post there about you hehe i posted there na sana hindi mo na lang sinabi na you were expecting emman to be nominated instead of yvan ๐Ÿ™‚ anyway some pexers were saying that teachers shouldnt say something like “hindi dapat ikaw ang nanominate” or “we don’t understand why ur nominated” coz its like discrediting the jurors daw but well..different opinions ๐Ÿ™‚ i’m glad to hear you take time to check PEX…

I like kristoff too…he’s kind hearted and very likable. Most pexers know na kung boses ang pagbabasehan talagang mahina sha compared to the others but they still want Kristoff to stay kasi mabait sha…you’re right, he has this amazing spirit.

about the intimidating posts…yeah! hehe but I love them..makes you think, you know ๐Ÿ™‚

    okay thanks…

  4. I am too, intimidated by your too serious posts and that cool pic of yours. ๐Ÿ™‚

Maybe just like the others, i should just express my thoughts and opinions thru e-mail? Haha! But another juicy thing about your blog is reading the commenters opinions, they write interesting and informative things here.

hip and respectable,i like the title. I could use it in one of my entries too, something like hip and (not so) respectable,hehe..

    Hi from sachiko

  5. vernaloo–no worries. I take nothing personally. Or at least try not to..

Sachiko–ha ha. Bagay nga sa yo. When you’re BAD you’re good!!

  6. hehehe marami rami rin pala kaming medyo nailang (intimidated) sa ibang post mo. I guess nasanay kami sa mga usual entries mo dito. But nevertheless binabasa pa rin naman namin.

Im a avid PDA watcher ok FAN hehehe If i missed a show sa TFC thank God for youtube at doon ako nanood ng mga namiss ko na show.

I cant wait to get hold of my Kami nAPO Muna album pag uwi ko. My friend said nakabalot na raw under the Christmas tree as well as with your books na rin hehehe

    God bless neybor!

  7. Hi Jim, It’s been a while. Sounds like you’ve been busy. Two things made me stop to comment.
    1. “hip and respectable” I play with astrology. My best friend is virgo and my rising sign is virgo. Your title caught my eye because this month of October the planets and stars show that Virgos are within a phase that will allow them to see a whole new view of themselves – one that’s more updated and relevant than the one they were carrying around up until this point. I like watching these things unfold. Good music is timeless.

and 2. Salt and pepper. The photo you posted. It just occured to me, thats what’s different about you.

……..a fan from the very begining,

    Becki

  8. here in Manila, visiting. Ay naku, maka-puso itong sister ko and family. Canโ€™t get chance to watch PDA. My sister in Calif is maka-pamilya and sheโ€™s been trying to convince my sister here to switch pero ayaw. itโ€™s interesting how polarized the people are.

I went to Batangas yesterday and saw SM Batangas City and SM Lipa. The other day I was at SM Mall of Asia and maybe today I will be at SM Makati. Of wow, definitely an SM country; SM is shoe mart no more.

Thereโ€™s APO show at Megamall this Friday night; great thing to see on my final night in Manila. I am bringing a troop of relos incl some from SF. It better be a good show, Jimโ€ฆ….i know- No need to say that, right?

I guess we really are intimidated with the serious writings, haha!

I love your pic here sir jim. I find men with little gray hair sexy, hehe. It signifies maturity and wisdom and it’s sexy (did i just say sexy again?!*wink*)

  10. Good job as Headmaster…we never miss an episode of PDA. I was also surprised to know that all of our relatives in the states regularly watch PDA spcecially the performance night. They find it entertaining lalo na merong mga filams (Irish,& Kris) We even discuss some suggestions for the show whenever we chat online or get to talk through phone.

Hindi ko lng maiwasang magalit sa ibang tao na hindi nakakaapreciate ng show, lalo na yung mga nkatutok sa kpuso…chronic nitpickers…overly critical…ska kesyo d nmn daw sila (scholars) mgaling etc…sbi ko nmn try mo mnood ng 2-3 episodes….ayaw nmn. pero one time nahuli ko friend ko who is critical of PDA na naggo-google ng lyrics ng Hawak Kamay ni Yeng..HAHA! The song is very catchy lalo na sa mga pinoy na madaling makaappreciate ng songs na mganda and lyrics ska catchy ang melody. Ang galing po tlga ni Yeng…although payong kaibigan lng sa kanya…kya minsan d sya maappreciate ng judges kase masyado nya ina-assert yung singing style nya…she’s more into rock-alternative which is devoid of excessive vibrato…low tones etc. ala avril lavigne… obviously ayaw nya maging tunog birit songbird….pero judges see it not as a deliberate styling but an improper breathing techniq, improper placement etc… sna try nya, to be judge-friendly in her performance para la na makocomment sa kanya.

Another thing po Headmaster, i suggest na sana pag six na lang sila magperform sila during performance night with an established singers (Yeng-Eli Buendia Yvan-Sarah G. Davey-Rachelle Anne Panky-Frenchy Dy, Joan-Erik S. Irish-Piolo… scenario lang naman po ito…) maganda kung tatanungin muna sila kung sino yung opm singer na hinahanganan nila , not knowing na ito yung ipi-pair sa knila…exciting! dito matetest kung gaano na sila ka comfortable magperform with other artists…that would really be a one tough test of their composure, professionality and talent

Again Thumbs up mr. Jim Paredes m.p.k.a. (more popularly known as) The Headmaster. More power PDA!

  12. balikbayan–I hope you get the album na. Guess what? They’re already planning part 2!!

    fj7000–Enjoy the show!!!

    anomnymous–salamat

yang–The greying is nice. It just takes long to get there.

  13. ric adrian–I can see you’re really into it!! Yes, it’s a show that can get you hooked talaga.

doranne–of course you aren’t. Lawyers are never intimidated by anything. ha ha.

  14. I have been watching PDA everynight since the first sememster ended in my school. I enjoy watching the show. It reflects the lives of different people trying to reach their dreams (particularly, that of the scholars). This is the advantage of a reality show. It can be an opiate to the masses because some people try to relate themselves to those who are on TV and find their own lives interesting. Example, I can relate with Kristoff. Hehe. I am sad that he didn’t make it to the last. During expulsion night (the same night you announced their MIDTERMS) I saw your hands shaking while also telling that Kristoff got a low score. I don’t know if I saw it right or it was only me. Because I did observe you po. Hehe.

APO has wonderful songs and even time goes by, your songs will always touch hearts!

By the way, I am Flora po. I have linked your blogsite in my blog ( http://www.tabulas.com/~anewflora). I have an account here but I prefer to use that blog.

Lastly, I am not intimidated with your posts

Mr.Jim. I like them so much but unfortunately I wasn’t able to leave any comment because sometimes I run out of time and the site loads slowly. I love reading them all.

    God bless! ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. When I read Jim’s blog, I am not intimidated. After all, he is just as human as I am. I do not even say I am “impressed” which bespeaks that you admire him. Jim writes more to relate with others than to impress us with his writing abilities. He does not need anymore compliment. He has had it since becoming a member of APO. I write and make comments because “I AM TOUCHED”. When the subjects he writes prick my emotions, then he succeeds in relating to me.

  16. Good day, headmaster jim! It has been a while since I visited your blogsite. =)

About PDA, i’m a fanatic! Everytime po na napapanood ko yung sharing of experiences nyo sa kanila or sila sa inyo, I feel their struggles. alam kong nandun yung drive nila to reach the top, that everytime they stumble, they lose hope. buti na lang po nandyan kayo and yung mga teachers, comforting them, making sure everything will be alright, and explaining to them that โ€“ that is how life goes. Other than drawing strength from their co-scholars, they draw strength from you, kayo po ang ‘family’ nila diyan sa academy.

Congratulations, sir jim and to the other teachers, for helping the scholars discover their talents, and that they can do it!

As of Kami nAPO Muna, it rocks!!! =)

  17. I’m glad the album’s doing well and a new generation is discovering music that’s truly originally Pinoy. I’ll pick up a copy when we go home this December. Will PDA still be showing by then?

  18. Hello! I think this would be my first time to comment in your blog eversince I started visiting it a few weeks ago. Not intimidated to comment, but rather, I just haven’t found the time to write out more sensible thoughts, being in the fog with all the things I’ve been doing. But now I can sit down and take the time to read.

At first, I can’t believe that this is really Jim Paredes’ blog. I mean, with all the copycats out there, who knows? But I’ve read through the posts and the comments. So, I guess it’s really you after all. Haha. ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s just so amazing that, in my mind now, you aren’t just someone that I see and hear on TV but rather somebody who’s flesh and blood. I’ll be reading more of your posts…

I have watched the past few episodes of PDA, because of a friend’s recommendations And, I think, I’ve seen a couple of performance nights. I really enjoyed the show, though I could only watch some of the weeknight episodes and performance nights because work and studying is taking up much of my time. I think I’m starting to get addicted to it, as I was with the first edition of PBB. I’m going to watch out for Yeng and Panky. I like them. Hopefully work and study will allow me time to see more of them. ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. hi sir jim! (waaa, feeling scholar ako! LOL)

i’m an avid fan of PDA, and i think that you are doing a great job as headmaster. i admire you for the decisions that you have made inside the house, and saludo ako sayo!

i got APO’s tribute album, and i love the songs, especially when i met you. but i love sarah geronimo’s remake. LOL!

anyway, i am so happy to have come across your blog. thank you for making PDA a much better show than i have anticipated. and thank you for being the writer/mentor/headmaster/artist that you are. *bow*

may God continually bless you. smiles from Bacolod City. ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. hey (headmaster) jim, kamusta po? wag po kayong matatawa pero addict nadin ako sa PDA!!! halos five days ko palang sya pinapanood and madalas inaabot ako ng 2am just watching it, hehehehe!!!! actually i can only watch it thru youtube.com because there is no TFC here in Nova Scotia, Canada. kaya i don’t get to watch all of the episodes chronologically. i just wish there was a website na nandun lahat ang episodes. anyway i just want to congratulate you for a job well done, especially when you were comforting RJ when he was expelled. i mean i really felt na totoong tao ka and walang halong showbiz. i bet if the headmaster was a different person, RJ would have a difficulty accepting that he was voted off, but when you talked to him, it seemed as if you raised his hopes even more, making him realize that there is more life for singers/songwriters outside and that he should continue what he is doing. taas po talaga kamay ko sa inyo sir jim for loving all your PDA kids, talagang they are lucky to have you as their headmaster. by the way, i am eyeing yeng, panky or eman ang mananalo. sana po tama ako, heheheehe!!!!!

    p.s.
during my college life i composed my own songs too, pero po mukhang nakalawang nako sa pagui-guitara..i hope someday i can continue doing my passion too.

    sge po ingat!

  21. It was quite a pleasant surprise for me to discover that you have a blog. I found it through one of my blogkadas. At first I couldn’t believe it is the real YOU, but, it is you!

Ah the PDA. This is the reason why I decided to order TFC. You’re doing an outstanding job Jim. Moy & the other voice coaches are doing a great job too. However, you should boot out the “diction” teacher. He/she is too bossy & looks like a power hungry tyrant. He/she should emulate Moy and you. Both Moy & you are the ideal teachers because of your compassion.

Last Saturday’s judges should not have been there. Are they really qualified to judge? They’re playing with the lives & future of these kids. It was pretty obvious that they were not serious with their judging hearing their bad calls and critiques. Kuh was very biased and hard on some of the students.

Who chooses the panel anyway? Are there any defined critiria to be a judge?

  22. Wow! Jim Parades? I never thought I’d stumble on your blog.

I must admit, I may be one of the few people who haven’t seen an episode of PDA.

But I really do enjoy your music though, and that double album release of Kami nAPO deepened my appreciation of it. I actually liked the originals more… hehehe.

Nice to see you on the blogsphere

  23. Manong Jim!

    Kumusta po?

I watch pda once in a while and I am enjoying and learning more about the teachers or mentors way to inject important aspects of a being. the person comes first, then the artist.

To be honest, I decided once to join for the sake being taught to by the mentors. However, I need to choose from my degree and from honing my talents. In the end, I picked the degree.

I do hope that after your job as a PDA, there would be a school in which there’s no camera, directors, commercials/advertisements and the pressures of the society that will rise someday. Just the students, you and some of your friends who would like to teach us.

Iba talaga kasi yung force niyo kapag kayo yung nagtuturo. I dream that someday, i’ll become one of your students.

By the way, sana kapag may oras na po ulit kayo, makagawa po sana kayo ng nobela. =) Or collection of short stories! =)

Regarding the APO songs… Would you share us some of the hidden stories or inspirations regarding one of your songs from any of your albums? =)

Parang kailan lang… Apo once made their own remakes of some of the hit songs of the rising star bands like parokya and eraserheads.. =)

ps: I would like to ask for paulo coelho’s email if you still have pa po? =) thank you!

  24. Ako hindi na-intimidate. I mean, for you to come out and have this blog and put up a commenting system tells me that you’d be pretty open to anything and everything that might pop up. It takes just a smidgen of toffee-nosey to intimidate me and maybe that doesn’t happen here because you’re basically a nice guy.

Now, as to whether I’m getting most of what you write about… that’s a different story altogether. But hey, I give it my best efforts, each and every time… hahaha!

  25. hello sir jim…i so love your articles/entrys..well regarding PDA I’m a fan of Iya and JayR..
and nabalitaan ko po JayR is sick daw..I hope u can let Iya go inside and talk to him for a while..or maybe kahit voice message lang over the loud speaker..thank you po..

  26. Hi Mr. Jim, I haven’t been an avid viewer of PDA and I’ve only started watching it beginning October and I would like to congratulate you and the staff for coming up with your owen version of this show. It is a stepping stone to undiscovered pinoy talents. Although everyone can carry a tune, there are still a few that really stands out among the crowd. We were very surprised when Iya was expelled last Saturday. We expected her to be in the Top 6 and we were completely dumbfounded by the way the scholars voted. Iya may not be a big hit among the scholars but she is a big hit to us when it comes to talent and considering who she was up against I think it was unfair that she wasn’t able to prove herself but I am optimistic that this young lady will have a chance to make a future out of it in the pinoy music industry. ABS-CBN should take a note of her voice coz I haven’t seen anyone in the ABS-CBN pool of talents that has that kind of singing style and voice! And if there is a wildcard to come back in the finals among the expelled scholars, I hope that true talent will be the one to come back, not the one that’s media hyped!
P.S. When are you guys coming to Chicago (APO), we were fortunate to watch your concert with Joey Albert a few years back, we hope to see you here again…we love your music! Good Luck!

    mitch

  27. oh, i’m a forever APO fan. Still can’t forget that concert at FolkArts I accidentally discovered as it was my habit to visit the area when I have the time. Ended up buying the ticket for thrice it’s original price para lang makanood. And, got your song When I Met You played during my wedding, too! APO is a legend ๐Ÿ™‚

  28. wella, Tess, pinkmartini143, kaye–salamat. I enjoy my role in PDA except the last moments on a saturday night when we have to choose only 1 scholar to save. Masakit!!

christianne–PDA runs till Dec. 16. Enjoy the album!

royce–the judges are men and women who have excelled in the field of music, performance or other aspects of showbiz. Their decisions are independent and a hit or miss thing, I must admit. Sometimes they pull out shocking surprises. Whatever else happens, we just do our best to make sure the kids are prepared for the outside world if they really wish to pursue it.

    ferdz–salamat sa bisita

greenmangoes–someday soon I will put up a performance school. You can get Paolo C.’s email on the web.

I will write an article soon about APO’s songs.

lala–salamat. visit the apo site at apohikingsociety.org

  29. hi, sir jim ๐Ÿ™‚

once in a while i visit your blog when i have time here at work hehehe. i’m always astounded and humbled with your posts and i guess this is the first time i’ve commented because beta accounts have just been recently allowed to do so. can i link you up, too? just wanna share your blog with my friends.

about pda, i’m an avid fan! though at times i can’t watch due to overtime or weekend events, thank God for youtube.com ๐Ÿ™‚
aside from the trivialities and love teams, i like the fact that i also learn from the teachers like the scholars do. and that’s a good thing for a reality show: the audience (esp. aspiring singers also) learn from it.

btw, Kami nAPO Muna rocks! i loved it the first time i saw and heard the performances in ASAP. i wish i can buy a copy but i’m tight on budget. i guess i have to make do with the radio plays and online streaming. congrats on being “hip” again ๐Ÿ™‚

    more power and God bless…
hope you still get peaceful sleep despite the mumbo-jumbo around us. ๐Ÿ™‚

    *neri*

p.s. i also love your photo gallery. ^_^

  30. sir jim..รผ i admire the intellectuality of the insights you bring out on your posts.. and for PDA, we are totally hooked on it.. i agree with you that yeng has superior talent among all the other scholars..and your blog really rocks talaga!! its really good…Matane!รผ

  31. Hi Jim. I’ve been an Apo fan since way back when you were the Apolinario Mabini Hiking Society. And I’m lucky that when I went to Manila recently, I caught your concert at Cinema 10 at the SM Megamall. I had with me a former colleague (I’m a retired teacher) who gifted me with your Kami nAPO Muna CD which I enjoyed a lot. We had a great time at the concert except that I had to explain some things to her (like Gladys Knight and the Pips and why I was dying with laughter at what you guys did) and Wooow W-O-W woooow. Plus, we saw the PDA guys there so it was an added bonus. I watch the PDA regularly and I like to let you know that it has given me a better understanding of our younger talents and wanna-be-artists. I admire the way you handle these young guys especially when you “bring them back to earth”. Thanks, Jim and more power to you guys both in the PDA and the APO!

  32. Hello Mr. Paredes. I’ve had Apo’s songs in my iPod for the last two years. My friend never ceases to give me crap for it… She has a questionable taste in music, you see. You can’t imagine how happy I was to find out about the tribute. I first learned about it from Sound, which I’m also a big fan of. I like their version of “Di Na Natuto”. I think Drip’s “Kabilugan” is amazing too!!! I’m curious… do you have a fave cover?

  33. kaye– I like a lot of them–Blue Jeans, Di na natuto, Kabilugan, Panalangin, Nakapagtataka, Batng-bata ka pa. Yakap sa dilim. But I always enjoy litsening to doo bo doo!

Basically, the more they made the songs their own and digressed ffrom our fersion, the moer I liked it.

  34. hello po headmaster Jim!

grabe.. i super love panky talaga.
    her attitude & her voice..

please tell her to be strong,
there are still people who believes in her.

    “talented people are misunderstood..”

    have a nice day.. =)
